Attars and Perfumes, what’s the difference between the two?

Looking to buy a fragrance and not sure whether to choose Attars or Perfumes? Worry not! We’re here to help.

Here are some differences that might make it easier for you to choose.

1. Their form

Attars are concentrated, naturally occurring fragrances that are derived from natural sources in the form of oils.

Perfumes, on the other hand, are in the form of sprays and contain alcohol.

2. Making of Attars and Perfumes

Attars are created using traditional methods of hydro-distillation, with Sandalwood oil as the base. The raw material used in this process of distillation is sourced from different parts of the plants, such as roots, flowers, and leaves.

Perfumes are created using essential oils, attars, other synthetic molecules, and alcohol. Perfumes are not all-natural.

3. Natural? Synthetic?

A major, and most obvious difference between the two is that Attars are natural/nature-based, whereas Perfumes are chemical-based.

4. Projection

As Perfumes contain alcohol and Attars are oil-based, Perfumes have better projection as compared to Attars.

5. Price

Attars that are authentic and made with true sandalwood are usually costly, simply because the production process is labour-intensive. For the same reason, attars are also not easily available and thus, are highly-priced.

Perfumes, on the flip side, are available under all price brackets. Some are extremely expensive with designer labels, others are reasonably priced for everyday use.
